On Sunday, I did the unthinkable. I missed my first Cardinals game of the season…and on Jackie Robinson day! (*Bad baseball fan*) But looking at the scoreboard, it may have been good luck.
I expected the Cards to rack up runs, but when I finally got to my phone, I couldn’t help but notice something. It seems that the biggest story from our 10-3 win was not taking back the series from the Cubs…But instead a young man with a familiar last name. Chris Carpenter may be out of the game at the moment, but Matt Carpenter is turning heads!
He has absolutely owned the Cubs, going 4 for 4 with a homerun and 5 RBIs in the series closer. And so, we all want to know…who is this guy?!
Wikipedia tells me that he was drafted in the 13th round of the 2009 draft and played at Texas Christian University. He got the call to the majors on June 3, 2011 and debuted on the June 4.
A natural third baseman, he has had some prime opportunities to showcase his talent replacing an injured Lance Berkman at first. And unfortunately, that will end tonight in the first of a three game series against the Reds with the Big Puma’s return. (Not that we aren’t all looking forward to seeing some more Lance!)
But we’ve all noticed Matheny’s tendency to give his starters a rest, so don’t count him out of the lineup on a regular basis by any means. And if you want an even better insight into the latest Cardinals run producer, look no further than his twitter account. Yes, if the beginning of the season is any indicator, we will surely be seeing some great things from Matty Carp.
