Published on my baseball blog, February 28th, 2012:
My duffle bag is currently sitting in front of me stuffed with Cardinals t-shirts…way too many for a 2 day trip, but I can’t very well leave them behind, can I? The MLB Network blasts from our living room television and I’m pretty sure my poor roommate is wondering what kind of madness she came home to this week. My mom calls to clarify that I know what I’m doing tomorrow, and I have to explain to her that no one really knows what we’re doing…yet. (Love you, Mom!)
And all the while I’m keeping a constant list in my head of everything I have to get done before I leave bright and early. Finish packing – that’s a must. I should probably make sure I haven’t somehow missed any important baseball stories as of late – hence the MLB Network. And I need to rehearse my pitch for the MLB producers. “Crazy Hair Kelsey,” as affectionately referred to by some of the contestants, might just make an appearance today…Then it’s off to work at the theatre and tinychat until 3:30am, right? Just like every other night.
Wait – no – I have to be up at 3:30?! It looks like my next Fan Cave dance party will just have to be in person! My anticipation to meet the people who have inhabited my computer screen for the past few weeks is growing by the minute! It almost doesn’t seem real – these can’t be actual people because they only exist in cyberland. I feel like I’m an audience member about to witness the breaking of the fourth wall (theatre reference, anyone?) The funniest part is, I know that when we all finally come face to face, it will appear to outsiders as if we are having some sort of long-lost reunion…
We don’t care what other people think, though. What is most important for us is that for 2 whole days we will be injected into the fold of Spring Training as our own 16th Cactus League Team: “The Fan Cave Finalists.” Play ball!
Each of us will be put to the test, competeing for one of the coveted spots on the Fan Cave starting roster come opening day. We will simultaneously be each other’s competition and each other’s teammates. Who will be thrust into the national attention and asked to face some of the biggest stars of the MLB? That remains to be seen…
Let’s hope I’ve kept fit in the offseason! To tell the MLB Fan Cave why you think I should be chosen, visit their facebook page and write on the wall…or simply tweet the @MLBFanCave them, hashtag #KShea4Cave!
