Last night the Marlins put on a show…everywhere but on the field. Sure it was the opening of their new neon green ballpark, but the night ultimately belonged to the Cards.
Matheny got his first win as a manager, and Kyle Lohse went 6 innings without giving up a hit. As hushed whispers of “no-no” echoed across America, I kept knocking on wood. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me…but ultimately, he had an amazing game giving up only 1 run on 2 hits. Applause, please!
Other highlights included Beltran singling for both the first hit in Marlins Park and his first regular season at-bat as a Cardinal, some 99 mph heat from Motte, and David Freese going 3 for 5 to prove that last October was no fluke.
I’ve defended him and the Cardinals to my Fan Cave friends countless times and I know they aren’t the only skeptics this year…But I did receive an apology after the game. Sincere or not, let’s hope we can keep this up so that I can brag about my boys!
And at the end of the night, Molina gave Matheny the game ball and the whole team doused him with a nice shower of…water. I suppose some celebrations are best kept tame. Either way, the team chemistry is working for us! I’m a firm believer that camaraderie in baseball is one of its greatest appeals.
So, with game 1 in the books, let’s all take a happy flight to Brewers country and show our NL Central rivals what we’re made of!
